Activision Confirms Call of Duty ‘Full Premium Release’ for 2023, Reportedly Expansion for Modern Warfare 2

Activision’s latest financial release hints that a Modern Warfare 2 expansion may be planned as part of a ‘Full Premium Release’ sometime in 2023.

Statements from Activision’s latest financial release indicate that a paid expansion is in the works for Infinity Ward’s hit shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This new expansion isn’t the only additional content planned for the shooter, with a tweet in early November announcing that several famous soccer players are coming to Modern Warfare 2 as part of an upcoming promotion.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the latest entry in Activision’s nearly 20-year-old military shooter franchise. Featuring a world-hopping campaign mode that sees players doing battle in locations ranging from the US-Mexico border to a legally dubious recreation of The Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam, Modern Warfare 2 is Infinity Ward’s latest attempt at keeping the juggernaut of a franchise relevant in a gaming landscape littered with military shooters. The game has received a generally positive response from players and reviewers post-launch, despite a pre-release open beta occasionally marred by bugs and other technical problems.

In a tweet from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, it is speculated that a new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 expansion developed by Sledgehammer will be released in 2023. This speculation was fueled by a section in Activision’s latest financial release stating that the publisher is working on “the next full premium release in the blockbuster annual series.” Any expansion for the hit shooter would likely be a guaranteed moneymaker for Activision following news that Modern Warfare 2 earned over $1 billion dollars in revenue in its first ten days, a new record for the franchise.

Details of the “full premium release” were not included in the earnings report, but Activision’s statement indicates that gamers should expect it to include a substantial amount of new content. In addition to new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 content, the report also mentions new free-to-play experiences for fans of the franchise. This statement could indicate that new Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 maps are on the way, as hinted at by a Modern Warfare 2 Easter egg.

Even as some players continue to express their frustration with the litany of bugs present in the game’s multiplayer and campaign modes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has already proven to be a massive hit with many gamers worldwide. If a new expansion is able to resolve some of the loose ends from Modern Warfare 2’s campaign mode while improving the series’ trademark multiplayer combat, with a healthy heaping of bug fixes thrown in for good measure, then the runaway success of Activision’s iconic shooter seems almost certain to continue.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
