‘Deadpool 3’ Release Date, Plot Details

I’ve gotta say: after the culmination of She-Hulk, where CGI blurs of green pixels were twerking and smashing and screaming bloody murder left and right, I really needed some good news from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thankfully, we’ve been receiving a steady stream of cheery updates regarding Deadpool 3—Ryan Reynolds’s long-awaited MCU debut. After flirting with Hugh Jackman for over a year about getting the man to trade Music Man for his old Wolverine threads, he finally worked his magic. In late September, Reynolds posted a video with a long preamble about Deadpool 3, which culminates in Jackman himself walking in the background, confirming his return.

Here’s what Reynolds had to say:

Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now. I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every ‘Deadpool’ needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.

Now, Mr. Jackman has offered his side of the story. In a new interview with Variety, he opened up about his negotiations with Marvel and how he feels about playing the character for the umpteenth time. “A little part of me now thinks I’d be better at it,” Jackman said. “Is that arrogance of age or something? Wolverine’s a tortured character—more tortured than me. But I always get the feeling of him being comfortable in his own skin. And I feel more comfortable in my own skin now, even though it’s messier.” Something tells me Deadpool 3 will have a different tone than the X-Men movies where we met said tortured character.

By the way, Jackman added that Deadpool 3 might not even be the title of the film. “Well, not in my heart. I’m pretty sure Wolverine wouldn’t like that title,” he said. So, yes: Deadpool 3, or whatever the heck this thing is called, has a release date: September 6, 2024. Maybe we’ll know the plot of this film by then.
