Thanks to HBO, 2023 is already off to a good start. (The Last of Us, anyone?) Back in December, the streamer released a teaser for their upcoming television slate. As expected, we’ll receive another season of Succession and Winning Time, along with The Weeknd’s highly anticipated series, The Idol. But the sizzle reel also featured a surprise. This year, HBO will drop True Detective: Night Country, starring none other than former Esquire intern, Jodie Foster.
For the uninitiated, True Detective is a crime anthology series. Each season follows a new detective (or two), who is tasked with hunting down a murderer—while of course, battling their own demons. True Detective has always employed an impressive cast, featuring actors like Matthew McConaughey, Rachel McAdams, Woody Harrelson, and Mahershala Ali. So, it only makes sense that Foster was tapped to lead the next chapter of the show. Who better to track down a criminal than FBI Agent Clarice Starling?
The next season of True Detective is coming to a TV near you soon. HBO promises! Until then, check out the teaser below and keep reading for everything we know about True Detective: Night Country.

True Detective: Night Country Takes Place in Alaska
In the new season of True Detective, eight men working at a research center suddenly vanish in Alaska. Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Keli Reis) are hired to find the men. But in order to solve the mystery, they’ll have to unravel the town’s dark history along with their own twisted past. HBO recently dropped an image of the two detectives in action, looking very, very cold and gazing at… something. Check out the photo below.
True Detective: Night Country Features a Brand-New Production Team
Nic Pizzolatto, the original creator of True Detective, is not working on this season. True Detective: Night Country is helmed by Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) and Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) is executive producing as well. Aside from Foster and Reis, the cast includes John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand.
True Detective: Night Country Premieres in 2023
Unfortunately, HBO has not released an exact premiere date for True Detective: Night Country. All we have is the above-mentioned Instagram post, which tells us the series is “coming soon.” Not helpful! Ideally they’ll drop the series sooner rather than later—I, for one, am very interested to see how things pan out—but until then, stay tuned for updates.
