Resident Evil 4’s Merchant Maybe Talks a Little Too Much

The Merchant in the original Resident Evil 4 is one of the most iconic characters in the series, so naturally he was brought back for the remake, but some feel this helpful retailer maybe talks a bit too much. Regarded by many to be one of the best Resident Evil games of all time, Capcom’s recent reimagining had its work cut out for it, but the developer was able to find a nice balance between nostalgia and modernity that satisfied fans and critics alike.

Over the decades, Resident Evil has had a host of playable characters, from Chris Redfield to Jill Valentine to Ethan Winters. The fact that there have been so many protagonists, all of whom have their own personalities and backstories, is a reason that one of history’s most successful survival horror franchises remains so iconic. However, there are also some very memorable non-playable characters who have helped breathe life into each game.

One such example is the Merchant from Resident Evil 4. Since his appearance in the 2005 release, he has become very popular among the community. However, Reddit user mrdakam recently asked whether anyone else thinks he talks a bit too much in the remake. While most of the comments on the thread are just people quoting the NPC, some did agree the Merchant is a bit too talkative. In response, user Helmote helpfully posted a link to a mod called “Patient Merchant,” which allows players to mute the character’s more “impatient lines.” Evidently, some fans feel his dialog in the remake could do with being dialed back a bit.

Resident Evil 4‘s Merchant is a vital part of the game, allowing Leon to sell items and beef up his gear. The NPC offers a kind of respite for the player in both the remake and the original release, and many fans know the relief of seeing those lit torches when they enter a room. One of the things that made him so popular was his lines of dialog, which includes such classics as “What are ya buyin’?” However, the recent Reddit post shows that some people feel the new version of the Merchant has been given too much to say.

Although it’s not been out long, there are already a ton of mods for the remake of Resident Evil 4, some of which give Leon and Ashley new costumes, while others improve the game’s visuals. In any case, it never takes long for the modding community to get to work, and there is always going to be at least one mod out there that fans will want to get a hold of.

Resident Evil 4 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
